Algebra I

Syllabus

This is a two semesters course taught in double block setting.   That is a required course for graduation.

During the year the students will take the chapter tests, the benchmark tests, and two exams: 1st semester exam and 2nd semester exam.

At the end of the course the students will take SOL.

 

Textbook: Algebra I 

                   Publisher: Pearson / Prentice Hall, 2006 edition

 

 Objective: the students will learn the following topics:

                    Tools of Algebra

                     Solving Equations

                     Solving Inequalities

                     Solving and Applying Proportions

                     Graphs and Functions

                     Linear Equations and Their Graphs

                     Systems of Equations and Inequalities

                     Exponents and Exponential Functions

                     Polynomials and Functions

                     Quadratic Equations and Functions

                     Radical Expressions

                       

                    

    Required Materials

    Loose-leaf paper

     Pencils

     Three-Ring Binder

     Tabbed section dividers

 

Grading System

  1. Quarter Grades:

60% Tests

20% Quizzes

15% Homework, classwork, notebook, and labs.

 5% Benchmark Test

  1. Semester Grades:

40% First Quarter

40% Second Quarter

20% Semester Exam

Notebook and Notes

For the notebook you will use a 3-ring binder that is divided into four sections:

  1. notes
  2. classwork /homework
  3. returned quizzes / tests

      4.SOL review

Notes will have to be taking daily.

Notebook will be checked periodically for quiz grade.

Classroom Rules

  1. Show respect and kindness to others.
  2. Be in your assigned seats by the end of the tardy bell.
  3. Leave your assigned seats only with permission.
  4. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
  5. No obscene or abusive language in the classroom.
  6. Come to class prepared with all required materials.
  7. Food, drink, and gum are prohibited in the classroom with the exception of clear water bottles.
  8. Keep the room neat and clean.
  9. Do not put your head on your desktop or sleep.
  10.  Cell phones - turned off and out of sight (see student handbook).

Rewards

  1. In class verbal praise.
  2. Phone call or e-mail to parent.
  3. Letter of recognition to parent.

Consequences

  1. Verbal warning to student.
  2. Phone call or e-mail home to parent.
  3. Referral to administrator for repeat violation.
  4. Removal from class
